Alcohol and drugs have different effects on the body. Some are physical. Others are cognitive. These effects depend on numerous factors, including:
- Your gender
- Whether you consumed alcohol or a drug
- How much you have consumed
- How long it has been since you consumed it
- Your weight
- Your tolerance
Law enforcement officers are trained to look for signs of intoxication. Symptoms an officer will look for include:
- Slurred or incoherent speech
- Speaks too loudly, softly, slowly or quickly
- Slow verbal responses
- Rambling answers or changes in story
- Smell of drugs or alcohol
- Bloodshot eyes
- Flushed face
- Seems twitchy
- Trouble getting out of vehicle
- Difficulty with fine motor skills (i.e. handling driver’s license and documentation)
- Difficulty with balance or coordination (swaying, falling, leaning, etc.)
Sometimes these signs occur for reasons other than intoxication. Perhaps you were simply tired… or you were worried about something.
If an officer suspects drug or alcohol use, however, he/she will probably ask you to take one or more pre-arrest tests. These may include a DUI breath test or field sobriety tests. Or the officer may simply arrest you and request a post-arrest breath test and/or a blood test for drugs.
